Our ride today started with nice flat roads until we got close to the Belgian border, when the terrain changed to be quite hilly. After climbing a few hills, we stopped in Dranouter for something to eat. There was a massive music festival going on and lots of teenagers on the streets.
We arrived at our campsite in Ieper around 2:30 pm, which was situated only a short walk from the downtown centre.
After dinner, we walked over to the Menin Gate to witness The Last Post ceremony which has been performed for 95 years at this site. The Menin Gate is one of 4 memorials to the missing solder's in the Flanders area. It contains the names of 55, 000 soldiers who had no known grave. This was another powerful reminder of the significance of the impact of WW1, to those the the area. Unfortunately, we were unable to see the true structure because it is undergoing a 2 year refurbishing.
After the ceremony, we walked around the old city centre which was beautiful. However, a midway was set up in the middle, which took away from the beauty of the site.
An ice cream treat rounded off our day and we headed back to camp.
