Thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind during the night. We packed up everything wet with the hopes of some dry weather today and tonight.
After a couple of hours of riding through the countryside with some moderate hills, farm lanes and grassy paths we arrived at the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland cemetery. We immediately met some student guides from Canada who provided some information about the site and directed us on a self-guided tour. This site is so peaceful and lovely. The trenches from WW1 are clearly visible throughout the site. The cemeteries are so beautiful, manicured with flowers and shrubbery. And, the caribou statue is a poignant reminder of the importance of this site to Newfoundland. It reminded us of our time living in Newfoundland when our friends explained to us the importance of the battle of Beaumont-Hamel.
After our visit to Beaumont-Hamel the weather became very hot. We had another 3 hours of riding to get to Arras. We stayed with a Welcome to my Garden host, Vincent, a fellow bike traveller who very kind and hospitable.
In the evening we met with our friend from University days, Mary Spencer, who will join us for the rest of our trip. We are happy to have her join us and share in the adventures.
