We took our time getting ready to leave for town this morning. Had a late breakfast and John cleaned the bikes. We rode into town and locked our bikes up in the town centre.

Alberobella has an interesting history. Dating back to the 1400's, it developed into a farming community. The Trulli house was built without mortar so they could be configured as precarious buildings and easily demolished. By doing so the residents could avoid paying taxes to the Spanish court of Naples.

Today, Alberobella is divided into districts. We started in the neoclassic style district which is the newer part of town. At the end of this area we visited a large Trulli house which is part of the UNESCO designation and a heritage museum with original furnishings. It is also the largest Trulli in Alberobella, housed on two floors and is the only Trulli with an inside staircase. This building started as a church and was later a pharmacy, a court and then privately owned.

We visited the large St Cosmas & Damien Church and then wandered through the streets towards the Rione Monti district which is considered the older and more concentrated area of Trullis. Full of shops, restaurants and many tourists, we wandered up the hill to the only Trulli church and then worked our way back to the town centre.

Such a unique place to visit and learn a little more about the way of life in a Trulli.
