It rained last night but we woke up to cool temperatures and partly sunny skies with no rain in the forecast. So, we knew that everything would dry out once again.

We had a big breakfast and left to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk, about 6 km down the road.

Our ticket gave us entry to the old pumping station, a film on how the water management system works, a boat cruise to 2 open windmills turned into museums, an audio guide and unlimited access to the grounds. It was very well done.

There used to be hundreds of windmills but there are 19 authentic windmills remaining which still operate and are lived in by generations of millers. Although these days, they get help from modern pumps.

The mills have been draining the polder grounds for over 700 years, discharging the groundwater into the river nearby. If they were to stop doing that, the water would completely flood the area within 3 months.

We had coffee and another Dutch apple tart and, then, rode our bikes back to camp for the night.
