Ravenna is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site with 8 monuments added to their list because of the outstanding value and significance of the mosaics contained within each one.

Today we took a guided walking tour to 5 of the 8 monuments in the city. Our tour guide, Marco, took us on a journey back to the 5th to 8th centuries when Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and of the Byzantine Empire. The intricate detail, bright colors and the grand history and stories that the mosaics tell, made this such a unique experience.

Mausoleo di Galla Placidia - built in the 5th century, the mausoleum is a simple structure on the outside but holds stunning mosaics on the inside such as the sky covered with golden stars of the dome, which has made it famous worldwide.
