Thunderstorm during the night. First rain we've had since we left! Up early, packed and away by 8 am. Nice morning for a bike ride - cool and shaded along the canals again.Along tbe canal we saw a Canadian flag on one of the barge boats, yelled over and talked to the owners. They are from Vancouver, they spend several months of the year going through the canals of Europe.

Navigated our way through the city of Chalon-sur-Loire. The Eurovelo signage was not so good and didn't always line up with the map. Thankfully John got an app which doesn't require WiFi or data and it provides online maps of everywhere in the world. It seems to have gotten us out of a jam a few times now. Well worth the $15. Stopped at a boulangerie for the best croissant so far!!

Biked through more farmland before arriving at our destination at about 12:30 at Verdun-sur-le-Doubs, a nice quaint town.

Found out some information about the town at the tourist office. Seems this town has had its share of much conflict. In the 14th century, all inhabitants were killed and the hospital and church burned down. In the 15th century, the town was pillaged by Italian adventurers, the town was devastated by the plague and the town was captured and liberated several times. In the 16th century, the town was burned down followed by another plague. But, closer to today, in 1944, Verdun got lucky as German soldiers surrounded the town, threatened to shoot all the men and burn the town if the townspeople didn't confess to killing their comrades. Turns out some other group (Resistance in Sermesse) did the crime. So the people of Verdun were not hurt. Such interesting history in these small towns!

Met a nice couple from Belgium with their 4 year old son staying at the campsite next to us. It is really neat to see how people pack and travel by bike with kids. Needless to say, their little son looked very comfortable in his bike trailer.

Expecting to stay 2 nights, weather depending.
